We joined over 1600 others last Saturday participating in the iconic Bushy Parkrun, a few hours south-west from London. 5 minutes into the event we caught up with a local couple, and Keith made a comment about the volunteer hi-vis one of them was wearing.
Noticing the accent, they asked which part of Australia we were from. In response, we explained about our two decades in Townsville prior to 12 years in PNG, and our coming relocation to Melbourne.
Elspeth explained our mission work in PNG, after which the couple replied that they had been Wycliffe volunteers for many years, including providing support work with JAARS in the United States.
We had a lovely time over the next 45 minutes as we shared our mission experiences and our new found friends pointed out local historic sites. At the finish line we exchanged contact details, and they even offered to host us if we ever returned to the area on holiday.
How amazing is it to randomly find such a couple amongst a crowd of 1600 people? However… it was far from random.
That morning we had prayed as we often do, asking God to lead us into meaningful conversations during the Parkrun event. His response was beautifully orchestrated. Joy had just removed her nylon hi-vis just as we approached from behind due to the quite hot (29o) morning, passing it to a volunteer marshal along the route. Keith – being a natural joker – asked if she was now an “undercover volunteer”, and the conversation flowed from there.
We don’t always recognise God at work in the little things throughout our day, but consciously acknowledging His sovereignty in prayer may just open our eyes to see His workmanship in everything.
